Considering One Health in Your Choice of Disinfectants

In recent years, the concept of One Health has gained a lot of attention in the agricultural community. It is an approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, and seeks to promote collaboration and communication across different sectors to address health issues in a holistic manner. One Health has become particularly relevant in the current H5N1 High Path Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak, as it highlights the importance of understanding the linkages between human health, animal health, and the environment in which both operate. The fact that H5N1 can affect poultry, waterfowl, wildlife and humans is a perfect illustration of why One Health is important. A number of large livestock and poultry producers are taking measures to adapt to a One Health approach and one area they should focus on is their approach to cleaning and disinfection.

One important aspect of the One Health approach is our use of disinfectants to control the spread of infectious diseases. As everyone knows, disinfectants are chemicals that destroy or eliminate harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They are commonly used in agricultural facilities, veterinary clinics, and other settings to prevent the transmission of infections. However, most disinfectants on the market pose considerable health concerns to those using them or the environment.

The good news is that Prevail Disinfectant is one such product that aligns with the One Health approach. It is a broad-spectrum disinfectant that is effective against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is also safe for use on a variety of surfaces, including those commonly found in agricultural facilities and animal care settings.

One of the key benefits of Prevail Disinfectant is its ability to kill viruses, including HPAI. This is particularly important in the current outbreak situation, as the virus can be transmitted through surfaces and objects contaminated with the virus. By using a disinfectant that is effective against the virus, poultry producers and others can reduce the risk of transmission and protect themselves and their livestock and poultry.

Prevail Disinfectant is also effective against a variety of bacteria, including those that are resistant to antibiotics. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a growing concern in agriculture and animal health settings, as they can cause infections that are difficult or impossible to treat with conventional antibiotics. By using a disinfectant that is effective against these bacteria, producers and veterinarians can help prevent the spread of these infections and reduce the use of antibiotics. In addition, Prevail has no residual effect thereby eliminating the need for switching up disinfectant to prevent an anti-microbial resistance issue.

In addition to its effectiveness against microorganisms, Prevail Disinfectant is also safe for use in livestock and poultry operations. It does not contain harsh chemicals or leave behind toxic residues, which can be harmful to both humans and animals. This is important for maintaining the health of both animals and humans, as well as for reducing the environmental impact of disinfectant use. Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide, the active ingredient in Prevail, was the first disinfectant technology to receive EcoLogo approval in Canada.

Overall, Prevail Disinfectant meets with the One Health approach by providing a safe and effective way to control the spread of infectious diseases in agricultural operations and animal care settings. Its broad-spectrum effectiveness against a range of microorganisms, including viruses and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, makes it an important tool in the fight against infectious diseases. By using a disinfectant that is safe for both producers and animals, agricultural workers and veterinarians can protect the health of both animals and themselves, while also minimizing the environmental impact of disinfectant use. The agriculture industry definitely has an One Health option by using Prevail.
